Simon & Garfunkel's second studio album, released in 1966 on Columbia, built on the acoustic folk sound of their debut while incorporating electric instrumentation for the first time. The record features the title track "The Sound of Silence," which had already become a surprise hit after Columbia overdubbed electric guitar and drums onto an earlier acoustic version, as well as "I Am a Rock" and "Homeward Bound." The duo's signature close harmonies and Paul Simon's introspective songwriting are central throughout, placing the album firmly in the folk rock movement that was taking hold in the mid-1960s.
