Stan Rogers was a Canadian folk singer-songwriter from Ontario, and Northwest Passage was his fourth studio album, released in 1981. The record draws on Canadian history and landscape, blending Rogers' signature style of maritime and folk storytelling with his powerful baritone voice. The title track, a tribute to the explorers who sought the Arctic sea route, became one of his most celebrated songs, and "The Mary Ellen Carter," a rousing anthem about perseverance, is another standout that gained wide recognition in folk circles.
