Street Wave - 1980 Rock Compilation- Talking Heads, Pretenders, Harlequin, Ramones + (vinyl)

Released in 1983 by K-tel Canada, Street Wave is a snapshot of early ’80s rock, new wave, and synth-pop, blending international hits with Canadian standouts. The compilation features Billy Joel’s retro-styled “Tell Her About It,” Elvis Costello’s literate pop gem “Everyday I Write the Book,” and Nena’s Cold War anthem “99 Red Balloons,” which topped charts worldwide.

Canadian content is strong throughout, with Loverboy’s arena-ready “Queen of the Broken Hearts,” Parachute Club’s activist anthem “Rise Up,” and Payola$’s emotionally charged “Never Said I Loved You,” co-produced by Mick Ronson. Also included are Rough Trade’s provocative “Crimes of Passion” and Burton Cummings’ heartfelt ballad “You Saved My Soul.”

K-tel’s compilations were known for their eclectic curation and mass-market reach, and Street Wave remains a collectible time capsule of 1983’s pop-rock landscape.
