Tears For Fears' debut album from 1983, *The Hurting* is a British synth-pop record built around dense layers of synthesizers, drum machines, and the emotionally raw songwriting of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. The album draws heavily on the primal therapy concepts of Arthur Janov, giving it a darker, more introspective tone than much of the era's pop output. Notable tracks include "Mad World," "Pale Shelter," and "Change," all of which charted in the UK.
