Description

“Live” On Tour in Europe documents the 1976 European tour of the Billy Cobham–George Duke Band, a short‑lived but highly influential fusion ensemble featuring Billy Cobham (drums, percussion, synthesizer) and George Duke (keyboards, synthesizer, vocals). The touring lineup also included Alphonso Johnson on bass, John Scofield on guitar, and Chester Thompson on drums for selected tracks. Recorded across multiple European dates and mixed at Trident Studios in London, the album captures the band at a moment when jazz fusion was expanding into funk, progressive rock, and electronic textures.

The performances highlight Cobham’s rhythmic complexity and Duke’s melodic synthesizer work, with compositions drawn from both artists’ catalogs. Tracks such as “Hip Pockets,” “Ivory Tattoo,” and “Space Lady” showcase the group’s interplay, while “Do What Cha Wanna” and “Frankenstein Goes to the Disco” reflect the era’s blend of funk‑driven improvisation and electric jazz. The album’s production emphasizes live dynamics, extended solos, and the high‑energy performance style that defined the band’s 1976 tour.

This release stands as one of the key live documents of mid‑1970s jazz fusion, capturing a lineup that brought together musicians who would go on to shape the direction of fusion, funk, and progressive jazz throughout the decade.
