The Free Design were a family vocal group from New York — the Dedrick siblings — who released *Kites Are Fun* in 1968 on Project 3 Records. The album is a quintessential example of late-60s sunshine pop, blending lush vocal harmonies with orchestral arrangements, jazz-inflected chord progressions, and a generally bright, utopian sensibility. The title track became their best-known song, and the record also includes their version of "Umbrellas of Cherbourg."
