Here's a fascinating piece of vocal jazz history that often gets overlooked in the shadow of the Mills Brothers' earlier Decca classics. This 1981 Ranwood pressing captures the legendary quartet during their twilight years, nearly five decades into their groundbreaking career. By this point, only Harry Mills remained from the original lineup alongside Donald, but their signature tight harmonies and rhythmic vocal innovations that essentially invented the vocal group sound were still beautifully intact. The album showcases their ability to adapt their timeless style to more contemporary arrangements while maintaining the sophisticated swing that made them pioneers of pre-war popular music.
