The Shirelles were a pioneering girl group from Passaic, New Jersey, who rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s as one of the first Black female groups to achieve major mainstream success. This 1981 Canadian compilation on Phoenix 20 collects 20 of their hits, drawing from their classic early-60s catalog of pop and R&B. The set includes signature tracks like "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," the first song by a Black girl group to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Soldier Boy," another chart-topper from 1962.
