Tracklist
Side A I Mean You – Evidence – (When It’s) Darkness on the Delta
Side B Oska T. – Played Twice – Four in One – Epistrophy
Recorded live at Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall on December 30, 1963, Big Band and Quartet in Concert captures Thelonious Monk in a rare large ensemble setting, with arrangements by Hall Overton that expand Monk’s compositions without diluting their angular charm.
The album features Monk’s working quartet—Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Butch Warren (bass), and Frankie Dunlop (drums)—alongside a full brass and reed section. The big band arrangements bring new textures to classics like “Evidence” and “Four in One,” while “Epistrophy” closes the set with explosive energy.
Produced by Teo Macero, the U.S. mono pressing was issued on Columbia’s red “Guaranteed High Fidelity” label. The cover photo of Monk under a spotlight at the piano reflects the album’s dramatic and reverent tone.
This release stands as a testament to Monk’s compositional genius and his ability to command both intimate and orchestral formats.
