Here's a fascinating piece of British musical theatre history that doesn't surface very often. This 1968 Decca pressing captures the original London cast recording of "Canterbury Tales," the ambitious musical adaptation of Chaucer's classic work that ran at the Phoenix Theatre. What makes this recording particularly noteworthy is how it preserved one of the more adventurous theatrical experiments of the late 1960s, when producers were willing to tackle literary classics with surprisingly bawdy humor and folk-influenced melodies. The show featured seasoned British performers delivering Chaucer's ribald tales with a wink and a nudge, creating something that was both educational and genuinely entertaining.
