The Soma Records Story Volume 1 captures the wild spirit of Minneapolis's legendary Soma label, which operated from 1963 to 1967 and became ground zero for the Midwest's garage rock explosion. This BeatRocket compilation does justice to Soma's raw legacy, featuring prime cuts from The Castaways, The Novas, The Litter, and other regional heroes who helped define that mid-60s sound of teenage rebellion and three-chord fury. What made Soma special was its willingness to let bands sound unpolished and dangerous – exactly what the major labels were trying to smooth over.
