Here's the debut that started it all – Village People's self-titled 1977 release on Casablanca, the Canadian pressing that's become increasingly sought after among disco completists. This is where Jacques Morali's ambitious concept first took shape, featuring original members Victor Willis and Felipe Rose alongside the emerging camp theatricality that would soon conquer dancefloors worldwide. While "San Francisco (You've Got Me)" and "Fire Island" might not have the instant recognition of later hits, they showcase a rawer, more authentically funk-driven sound before the group fully embraced their cartoon personas. The production here has that unmistakable mid-70s Casablanca polish – punchy, compressed, and built for maximum dancefloor impact.
