William Bolcom is an American composer and pianist who has long been associated with the revival of ragtime as a serious art form. Pastimes & Piano Rags, released in 1974 on Nonesuch, features Bolcom performing classic rags by Scott Joplin and others alongside his own original compositions in the genre. The album sits at the intersection of classical piano performance and early American popular music, presenting ragtime with both scholarly attention and genuine rhythmic feel.
